The article was highlighting how people's lack of self-esteem (your #7) makes them vulnerable to misinformation by the media (#6)...and they then fall victim (#4) to hard sells for scam products that claim to offer easy instant weight-loss solutions (#9). I think you're on to something with this “battle gear of mediocrity”. These things, although they seem different, often go hand-in-hand.
